As a company, we are committed to strengthening communities by partnering with Indigenous Peoples to help build solutions that address social issues, such as access to healthy and affordable food and child and youth mental health.
Communities of Interest include the following:
- Pictou Landing First Nation (NS),
- Kahnawake Mohawk Territory (Quebec),
- Mississaugas of the Credit (ON),
- Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council (MB),
- Keewatin Tribal Council (MB),
- Songhees First Nation (BC), thus far.
Sobeys remains equally open to other initiatives that organically come to us from other Indigenous groups, including the Assembly of First Nations, Métis National Organization, and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.
Community Engagement Highlights
- Indigenous community engagements bring life to Sobeys Indigenous Relations Commitments. We are at the very outset of what will eventually be a wide range of Indigenous engagements across Canada.
- To start us off, we began working this past summer with Pictou Landing First Nation, the most proximal Mi’kmaq community to Sobeys own home roots in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. We are learning more about the various ways we can build sustainable partnerships. This includes areas of employment, store engagement, food security, health and wellness, and opportunities for supporting cultural days.
- We know that valuable insights can come from getting around the table together and we’d like to imagine many other opportunities for partnering with Indigenous communities across Canada.
- Stay tuned for more community highlights in the months to come!
