We are honored to work with Indigenous teammates throughout the company’s locations across Canada. As part of Sobeys commitment to Indigenous Relations, the way forward includes respectfully bringing visibility to Indigenous voices both within and outside of Sobeys.   • Sobeys DE&I Teammates Katie Kelland, DE&I Manager based in St John’s, Newfoundland, and Kakwiranó:ron Cook, Manager, Indigenous Community & Relations, based in Montreal, Quebec, launched the opening events of the 2022 National Franchise Committee meeting in person in Toronto.
  • Commencing with a traditional smudge led by Kakwiranó:ron Cook outdoors of the meeting venue, a panel discussion featuring Kakwiranó:ron (Kanien’keha:ka & Lakota), Waneek Horn-Miller (Kanien’keha:ka), and Ted Nolan (Anishinaabeg) about Sobeys Indigenous Path Forward took place.
  • Important topics included recruiting and retaining Indigenous employees, increasing visibility of Indigenous products in stores, and honoring local Indigenous nations during key moments in the year such as National Indigenous History Month, National Indigenous Peoples Day, and Orange Shirt Day – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. DE&I continues engagement with the franchise network.

Introducing Lacey Hill!

Lacey Hill Lacey Hill

We will have the honor to host musician Lacey Hill perform the conclusion of our upcoming virtual Orange Shirt Day event on Wednesday, Sept 28, which runs from 1pm-2pm EST. Lacey is Wolf Clan, Oneida of the Six Nations of the Grand River. She is a singer/songwriter who grew up making music. She played in the Breeze Band when they were nominated for an Aboriginal Peoples Choice Award, before launching her solo career to great critical acclaim. Her solo album “528 Vol 2” has taken her across Canada and on to international stages. Learn more about Lacey, her story, and her music here.
